The De la Cruz-Badiano Codex describes the use of three plants (M. tomentosa, M. frutescens, and M. grandiflora) for the treatment of emotional and affective disorders. This paper presents the results of different doses of crude aqueous extracts of the three plants related to anxiety in the Wistar rat. The three extracts exert anxiolytic effects in the elevated arm maze and the locomotor activity test, similar to diazepam, through actions on the GABA receptor. This supports a potential therapeutic effect of these plants for the treatment of anxiety.
