Abstract

The sustainable production of specialized metabolites is key to enhancing Colombian biodiversity. Cecropia angustifolia is notable for its triterpenes, which have therapeutic potential for type 2 diabetes, but their extraction impacts the ecosystem. At Icesi University, biotechnological methodologies are being developed for its in vitro production, optimizing biomass through cell culture and immersion systems. Furthermore, gene expression analysis of P450 enzymes has allowed us to understand how cultivation factors promote triterpene accumulation. These advances drive sustainable and scalable strategies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals for conservation and global health.
