Ten samples of abundant red macroalgae were collected from the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina, located in the Caribbean Sea, Colombia. Key sun protection parameters, SPF, UVAr and λc, were assessed in the polar extracts. The aqueous extracts were further analyzed for their MAA content using UHPLC-DAD-MS/MS for compound identification and UHPLC-DAD for quantification. Six MAAs were identified: shinorine, palythine, asterina-330, porphyra-334, palythine-threonine, and palythinol. Among the analyzed macroalgae, Laurencia sp. exhibited the highest total MAA concentration and demonstrated the highest UVB photoprotective capacity. These findings underscore the potential of these macroalgae as natural sources of MAAs.
