Abstract

Antioxidants protect against oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS), whose excess damages biomolecules and promotes chronic diseases. The fruit of Oenocarpus bataua is rich in antioxidant compounds, but their activity may depend on the extraction method. In this study, the cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of oils extracted by Soxhlet (SOX) and supercritical fluid emulsion (SFC) were evaluated in HepG2 and L929 cells. The SFC emulsion showed higher cell viability but without antioxidant effect, whereas the SOX emulsion reduced ROS production. Thus, SOX oil is emerging as a promising source of antioxidant compounds.
