Abstract

Essential oils from Dianthus caryophyllus L. exhibit antimicrobial activity and could be an alternative against Salmonella Enteritidis. Three extraction methods were evaluated, highlighting microwave-assisted hydrodistillation with a yield of 1.03%. GC-MS analysis identified compounds such as heneicosane and n-tetracosanol-1, with possible antimicrobial effects. Activity was evaluated using the Kirby-Bauer technique, using DMSO as a solvent, but this affected the results. It is recommended to reduce its concentration or use alternatives to avoid interference in future research on the antimicrobial effects of carnation essential oil.
