For centuries, Black and Indigenous communities in the Colombian Pacific have domesticated plants, taking advantage of their properties for health, nutrition, and energy harmonization. These plants, with sensory characteristics such as aromas and flavors, are also used in food preparation. Science has proven that their properties come from secondary metabolites, which protect them from pathogens and herbivores. Phytochemistry studies these compounds, identifying their therapeutic potential. Research into ancestry and phytochemistry has revealed the ethnobotanical wealth of plants with medicinal, protective, and nutritional uses in rural communities.
